Class Focus:

I am dedicated to helping students extend and discover their full academic potential. Written communication is an integral part of long-term academic success. Students must combine hard work with occasional creative risks. I enjoy guiding students on this journey of self-discovery and advancement, and I look forward to getting to know each of you during this semester.

English 1301 will focus on writing strategies and the evaluation of professional and student writing. Additionally, this course will improve your critical thinking and creative thinking skills. To succeed in this class, you will need to be able to manage your time effectively. Strong essays require planning and revision. Remember that setting goals for your performance can be a valuable tool. I am here to help you succeed and reach the goals that you set for yourself.  Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.  Be sure to use the question thread in the discussion board because other students may have similar questions.  Let’s be patient with one another and have a great semester!

Class Dates:

Class begins  Jan. 18, 2022

Last day to drop:  April 21, 2022

Last day of class: May 9-12, 2022 (Exam Final Exam Dates Will Be Announced)

Withdrawals

All withdrawals must be initiated by the student. Students may withdraw from any course online or by contacting the campus Registrar’s Office in person. It is strongly suggested that students withdrawing in person request a receipt. Students who withdraw online are responsible for verifying that their electronic drop processing was completed by printing a copy of their unofficial transcript or student schedule showing the grade of W. Until a student is officially withdrawn, the student remains on the class roll and may receive a grade of F for the course. Students who are unable to withdraw in person or electronically may mail or fax a letter to the registrar specifying class(es) from which the withdrawal(s) is/are requested. The letter or fax must include the student’s name, Colleague ID number, date and class information along with the student’s signature. If mailed, the request for withdrawal must be postmarked on or before the last day to drop, or if faxed, the date shown on the fax confirmation must be on or before the last day to drop a class.

State Withdrawal Policy – Important

Section 51.907 of the Texas Education Code, enacted by the State of Texas, Spring 2007, applies to students who enroll in a public institution of higher education as a first time freshman in Fall 2007 or later. The College may not permit a student to drop more than six courses, including those taken at another Texas public institution of higher education. All courses dropped after the Official Day of Record are included in the six-course limit unless (1) the student withdraws from all courses or (2) the drop is authorized by an appropriate College official as an approved Drop Exception. Further information on the new withdrawal policy can be found at the TCCD Web site: http://www.tccd.edu.

Late Policy

Late discussion board answers will not be graded and will receive a zero.  Late work for assignments is not accepted three days past the due date.  Each day the work is late 10% is deducted from the overall grade of the assignment.  Be prepared and do your work early to avoid this penalty.  The only excused absences are TCC field trips.  I do not give a grade of an "Incomplete."  If you have circumstances that prevent you from turning in assignment, you need to drop the class. **However, this class has discussion board prompts due each Sunday which is similar to an online class.  If you have to be absent, simply do the online work.  Also, please do inform me if you have tested positive for Covid.  Otherwise, do your best to keep up with the class even if you are absent.

Disability Support Services:

It is the responsibility of all D.S.S. students to inform their instructor of any special provisions needed during the semester.  D.S.S. can be reached by phone at (817) 515 1295.  To provide accommodations for eligible students, the instructor must receive an Instructor Notification form from the Disability Support Services Office.  If you have a disability for which you would like to receive academic accommodations, please contact the Disability Support Services office.

TCCD Inclement Weather English 1301 Policy:

If for some reason TCC is closed due to inclement weather or for any other reason, the student is responsible for keeping up with the material for that day.  If a class day is missed, we will continue to follow the syllabus and the student will still be responsible for the material as designated by the syllabus.  You may check campus cruiser for special announcements.

**Plagiarism will not be tolerated.  Please see the TCC Student handbook for more information about this violation.

**This syllabus may or may not be amended throughout the semester.
