**Online instructor certification = name of the process. BUT...**

Various "OIC" courses exist. BOIC is the current initial, first-time certification course while ROIC is for anyone who is REcertifying. It's important to sign up for the correct course! Currently, any OIC certification expires 2 years from the date of certification (calendar days).

All certification courses address research-based instructional practices for online teaching and learning, campus/district/federal requirements, and include performance-based assignments that require participants to learn about and apply best practices in Canvas courses.

OIC courses are NOT Canvas LMS training. Some resources regarding specific tools in Canvas are provided, but enrollment in any OIC presumes you are familiar with and have experience with Canvas LMS tools, such as the Rich Content Editor, Pages, Modules, Quizzes, etc. If you need Canvas training, please take this course first: Growing with Canvas.

BOIC (initial, first-time certification) Supervisor Approval Required**

This course is only for faculty needing FIRST-TIME certification OR if your status expired and has remained so prior to 2023 in the master Smartsheet. If you do not appear on the master list at all, take the BOIC.
- Sign up in LearnCenter (OED oversees this part).
- Before you are added to the course, you will need to request supervisor approval using a specific form--this will be emailed to you once you sign up in Learn Center and the ID team is notified of your registration.
- Once supervisor approval is received, you will be added to the Canvas course itself.
- Allow up to 3 business days to be enrolled in the Canvas course. You'll receive an automated welcome email from Smartsheet with two links:
  1. BOIC course where you are a "student" and submit assignments you create within your dev shell
  2. A blank Canvas dev shell where you have a "teacher" role; here is where you create the items to submit in the BOIC course
The current initial certification course is worth 16 hours of professional development and can only be awarded based on completion of the full course. No partial hours.
Course participants are expected to begin immediately after being enrolled in Canvas and have up to 8 weeks to complete the course from their enrollment date.
- Enrollment indicates your intent to start the course--participants should make steady weekly progress to avoid being withdrawn from the class.
- Participants receive automated weekly progress nudges/reminders from Smartsheet--do not reply to these directly.
- Support office hours are offered by course facilitators at regularly scheduled times or by appointment (unless holiday break or weekend)
Course facilitators are specific TCC Connect Campus Instructional Designers who:
- Facilitate the course (includes grading and feedback)
- Host regular office hours via Teams; they can also be reached via Canvas Inbox email

Course completion is required to teach with the Connect Campus.

All assignments must earn a minimum score (noted on that task's page)
Once all course requirements are met, participants will be added to a master list of certifications. Thereafter every two years, participants should enroll in ROIC (see below).
OED will update participant's LearnCenter record (your proof)

ROIC (REcertification)

The ROIC requirements are quite different from the initial certification course, so please read the directions carefully. No facilitation is done in the ROIC Canvas shell. However, it's a necessary repository for verification purposes to show faculty are taking professional development in three specific core areas that support effective online learning best practices.

Participants must complete ONE course from each of the three core recertification strands--these courses change and are largely facilitated by OED; as a result, the course lists are only viewable to ROIC enrollees. Credit for recertification must come from those listed eligible courses--check times/titles in Learn Center to sign up.

Faculty members who already completed the initial certification will need to sign up to take the ROIC (recertification) as they get closer to the cert expiration date--we recommend about four months out. All ROIC-eligible coursework has to be done within the last four months. Thus, you may not be allowed to enroll if you are out much farther than the four-month window prior to your certification expiration (you can check your expiration status using the dashboard link below).

**You must sign up in Learn Center first. Only then will the ID Team be notified to add you to the ROIC Canvas shell where you will be able to see upload directions, eligible courses, etc. Please allow up to 3 business days after sign up in Learn Center to be added to Canvas ROIC.**

The ID Team verifies accurate screenshots. We know it seems like extra steps, but only OED can oversee the LearnCenter record, which is the recognized official compliance record for every employee. Please ensure uploads are exactly right, based on the example provided in the ROIC. Once all are verified, the ID Team lets OED know to update the "ROIC" on your Learn Center record. Canvas and Learn Center cannot directly report data between systems; it requires humans. We appreciate your patience with updating records, which can only occur during business hours. Your LearnCenter record is the only official "proof" of completion; there are currently no certificates or badges.
