A Brief History of our Chapter and the Organization

Sigma Kappa Delta was formed under the auspices of Sigma Tau Delta, our sister organization and a national English Honor Society serving four-year institutions. Sigma Kappa Delta was created on April 21, 1996, in Chicago, Illinois and specifically for two-year colleges. The organization was incorporated in 1996 in Missouri as a not-for-profit educational entity and has grown ever since.

Its central purpose is to confer distinction upon outstanding students of the English language and literature in undergraduate studies to students of all majors. The name Sigma Kappa Delta comes from the Greek letters representing the first letter of each of the words that form the official motto, “Sincerity, Knowledge, and Design.” The official colors of the society are green and gold, and the official plant is the English ivy.

Our chapter at the Southeast campus is the Omega Delta Chapter; however, our Sigma Kappa Delta chapter is more than just another college club. It is a unique entity that opens the doors of opportunity for its members, promotes leadership, and fosters their academic, professional, and personal growth. Members share their love of literature, literacy, and linguistics with like-minded peers, participate in rewarding activities, and be recognized for their accomplishments.

There are more than 100 active chapters across the country and approximately 2800 members inducted annually, each defined by its location and membership, yet bound to the rest by the common goal of promoting excellence in the disciplines of the English language.
