Library Tips

The TCCD online library has so much to offer that sometimes really good features and content go unnoticed.  The drop-downs below will share information about signing into the library's Web site, using My Favorites to save content, Inter-library loans, how to open eBooks, accessing premium content in the databases, certification test prep resources, streaming video resources, LinkedIn Learning, and accessing eBooks and audiobooks through the app, Axis 360.

Sign Into the Library's Web Site

Signing in to the library's Web site makes accessing and saving content possible.  If you don't sign in before you start, you will be prompted to when you want to save search items or access premium content.

In the menu bar is a link to sign-in to your library account.  Use your TCC login and password to sign in.  You will be taken to your account page where you can see information about your activity like what you currently have checked out and when it it due.  Clicking on New Search at the top of the page will take you to a modified version of the home page.  From here you can use the search dialogue box to search for content or you can directly access databases to search for content.

The images below show screenshots of where to find the links and search boxes.

Using My Favorites To Save Content

The library's Web site allows you to save items from a search results list.  Clicking on the small pushpin icon to the far right of the cover thumbnail and information will save the item to your My Favorites page.  You can access your My Favorites by clicking on the pushpin icon by your name in the upper right corner of the screen.  You can further organize your My Favorites by creating labels.  Items in your My Favorites can have multiple labels.  To create a label, click on the link below the item's cover thumbnail that says, Add Label.  As you add labels, they will appear in the Labels column on the right side of the screen.  Clicking on a label in the list will display only those items with that label.

The images below show screenshots of where to find the links.

Accessing Premium Content in the Databases

Have ever searched for content, like a news story or science article on the Internet, only to run into a paywall block?  A lot of premium content is locked away behind these paywalls because the publishers would like to cover their expenses and make a profit.  Content can be purchased with personal subscriptions, but before you buy, check the TCCD databases to see if you can find the content their first.  The databases house premium content that as a TCCD student, faculty, or staff you can access without paying for - sort of.  Tarrant County College pays a discounted rate on access to most databases available through a program called TexShare Links to an external site..  Your taxes help pay for these resources.
The library catalog searches most of these resources, but sometimes it is easier to search for content directly from a database that specializes in that content.  If you need science content, search one of the science databases.  If you need literary criticism resources, search a database that specializes in that content.  The library's Web site provides information about the type of content found in each resource if you use one of the database title pages.
The images below show where to access these pages and how to see the types content in the database.

Test Prep Resources

Many careers and professions require a certification.  The TCC libraries have some resources that can help you prepare for many certification tests.  You will find practice tests and other materials in Mometrix Links to an external site. and Learning Express Links to an external site..  Both resources carry more than test prep materials.  Think of them as college and career prep resources that include certification prep.  This lists below link out to various areas of these resources.

Are you looking to add streaming content to your courses?  The libraries provide several options that cover all content areas.  (It is easy to get lost exploring - bring popcorn.)  Most can be embedded directly into a Canvas page, but since full length films may have issues loading, links are the best way to provide access to full length films.
While many databases include streaming video as part of their content, the databases listed below focus on streaming video.

LinkedIn Learning for Personal & Professional Growth

LinkedIn Learning is a online learning platform that hosts courses related to business and personal (creativity) growth.  In addition to the personal growth opportunities, you can earn professional certificates for Microsoft, Zendesk, and others.  There is also Certification Prep and Continuing Education Opportunities.
Once you sign up for a course, unless you take control of the notification settings, your email inbox will receive daily email from LinkedIn Learning with either course suggestions or encouragement to join the LinkedIn network.
When you create an account with LinkedIn Learning, the default for all notifications is on.  You will receive a lot of email unless you go into your account and change your settings.  On the LinkedIn Learning home page, go to the Notifications icon in the upper right corner and click on the dropdown arrow.  At the top of the Notifications window that opens, click the gear icon to get to notification settings.
See the images below to see how to customize your notifications.
