Serving as a Faculty Advisor for an RSO

An RSO advisor is an asset to student organizations offering their life experiences, wisdom, and knowledge of campus and district policies and procedures. In general, RSO advisors serve as a
resource to student organizations. While specific roles are defined between the organization and the advisor, an advisor generally:

  • shares knowledge, information and advice
  • encourages the development of procedures and plans of action
  • helps members apply principles and skills learned in and out of the classroom.
  • supports student leaders by sharing leadership skills and experiences
  • provides continuity for organization by sharing the history and traditions of the organization

Who can be an advisor?
An RSO advisor must be a full-time member of the faculty or staff at TCC who has a desire to connect with students in a meaningful way. Part-time and adjunct employees may serve as advisors as long as there is also a full-time employee advisor.

What are the benefits of serving as an RSO advisor?
RSO advisors are in a unique position to develop strong mentorships with their student leaders and members. Serving as an advisor can be a meaningful and powerful experience. Some benefits of serving as an advisor are:
• sharing your knowledge, interests, skills, hobbies or learning new ones!
• developing mentoring relationships with students
• gaining additional leadership and interpersonal skills
• attending professional or industry related conferences with students
• recognition of service to students and the institution

What are the mandatory expectations?
All RSO advisors must:

  • Attend Risk Management Training 
  • Complete the annual Campus Security Obligations under Federal Law Training
  • Attend organization meetings
  • Attend all off-campus activities
  • Serve as the Trip Administrator/Travel Coordinator for the RSO off campus field trips

 

What support do advisors have?
Student Activities is here to support our RSO advisors every step of the way! There is a dedicated full-time staff member in each Student Activities office to offer assistance, plus annual advisor training. There is no shortage of encouragement or appreciation for advisors!
